About Me

Hi! I'm Maggie, a 23 year old Peace Corps Volunteer living in Nacucha, Mozambique. I'm currently teaching (Basic levels 1, 2 and 3) which is around 8th and 9th grade English. My school is an agriculture/farming institute run by a Spanish priest and 3 Mozambican nuns--we're a pretty small community about 15K off the main highway so it's pretty mato (or out in the bush). My Portuguese is improving pouco a pouco (little by little). I've currently been in Mozambique for almost 17 months out of my 27 months of service. I've met some really good friends both PCVs and Mozambicans from home stay and in Nacucha. I love teaching and my students make me happy to be in Mozambique. Life is very different here than in the US but I'm used to it by now. Going back to the states is going to be a big change from living in rural Mozambique.

Some random facts about me:

  • I LOVE peanut butter and happy to know that "Black Cat" peanut butter you can find in Mozambique isn't all that bad (the nuns make fun of me for my mantegia de amendoim addiction)
  • I still miss frozen yogurt
  • I don't like bugs or bees but I've gotten used to them. I sometimes have bugs falling off my mosquito net into my bed--in the states I would have been really grossed out. Now I just pick them up and throw them on the ground...I don't even bother to kill them. I still freak out with the spiders here though.
  • I highly doubt I'll see any exotic animals up close....we do have monkeys living in Nacucha so maybe one day I'll see them
  • I'm very thankful we haven't had any big creatures inside our house...other pcvs have had snakes and bats in their houses and I'm pretty sure I would have run away screaming if that happened
  • The crianças finally know my name and say hello to me when I walk to the market :)
  • 10 months left to COS and I'm starting a library and tutoring program this year!
